Drawing your thoughts together

Drawing together by using only shapes allows the team to access hidden information about attitudes, feelings and behavioural patterns that are more difficult to express with words.

Tools

  • White sheets
  • Pens/Pencil
  • Drawing paper roll

Steps

  • The facilitator introduces the activity by asking participants to sit in groups. The groups should be formed by people working in the same team.
  • The facilitator asks the groups to identify the team’s 3 defining moments during that day (or week if you decide to reflect about a larger period of time) and write them on a piece of paper.
  • The facilitator asks participants to draw together on a sheet of paper the 3 defining moments previously identified by using the following symbols:
  • The facilitator should draw and clarify the meaning of each symbol, explaining that participants can not only draw these symbols but can play with their size, colours and position in the sheet (e.g. some elements may be central while others may be placed around the edges).
  • After each team completes their drawing on the paper sheet, the facilitator gathers the whole group and asks each team to explain their drawing by telling a story.
  • Finish the activity by asking participants to share their experience in groups.

Tips

  • The facilitator should remind participants that refined drawing skills are not needed, the activity  uses shapes that are easily drawn by everyone.
  • This activity can be used to reflect on a specific task or to reflect on a bigger project developed by the team.
  • At the end of the activity, the facilitator must conclude the activity and give space to any participant that wants to share what they liked most and least, as well as what they learn and have become more aware of after this experience.
Example developed at the end of the Course “Storia, Etica e Deontologia professionale”, Università degli Studi di Torino (sede di Aosta)
